Nashville, Tennessee Building Department Permit Submittal Tips

Anytime a construction project is in the developmental stages, it's imperative to have an understanding of the building department's permit process.  Express Permits has experience working with residential & commercial construction clients and their building permit needs across the United States and throughout select parts of Canada.  Today, we want to discuss our experiences submitting to or working with the Nashville Tennessee and Plan and Code Enforcement Department.  The following information has been helpful in submitting information to the Nashville Building Department for our clients.  Please feel free to read and respond with any questions or suggestions you may have.

How to successfully submit to the Nashville Building and Code Enforcement Department

1. Stay off the phones
Whenever submitting to the Nashville building and code department, we have found phone calls are not the most successful way to reach the building department staff.  Anytime a phone call has been made, we have been advised to make an appointment in person.  This can be very challenging if you are not located within a reasonable distance of the building department.  This can slow down and bring the submittal process to a standstill.

2. In-person visit
The building department staff the Nashville building and code enforcement office suggest scheduling an appointment for review in person.  We have found the best way to achieve a same-day appointment is to arrive at the building department office somewhere between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.  There is usually a line of people ready to request an appointment, so the building department offers in online schedule maker for sameday plan review.  This online scheduling system allows you to make an appointment without being in person.  However, be aware when your time for review is up you should be present in the department office.  Otherwise, your appointment may get overlooked for the next scheduled appointment if that person is already at the building department office.

3. Online contact information
Nashville Building Department offers a list of people to contact through their website.  By typing in "Nashville Building Department contact information" into an internet search, you should be able to find a list of departments to contact.  Departments will list the name,  phone number and email address of each plan reviewer for each Department.  Understanding the staff is overwhelmed with plans to review, we have found it much easier to correspond using email instead of reaching out by phone.  This allows the staff more time to review plans of the people that are in person and respond emails in appropriate fashion.  In addition, it also shows respect for the staff at the building department.
